Brief History
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Persia which became Iran in 1934, is the home of the original oriental carpet. Looking at a Persian carpet is like gazing into 2,500 years of artistic magnificence. A Russian professor by the name of Rudenko discovered the earliest known Persian carpet in the Altai Mountains dating back to the Fifth Century B.C. This Pazyryk rug design depicting a deer and Persian horseman is proudly displayed in the Hermitage Museum of Leningrad. These carpets for centuries have been ranked by the international community as the highest level of art by mankind. During the 20 year U.S. embargo, carpets with the Persian design became available from Pakistan, India, Turkey, or China trying to fill the void of this luxury item. Unfortunately, they are considered knockoffs and do not hold their value. One word of caution: if you are interested in retaining your initial investment, purchase carpets that are authentic to the region of their country; otherwise you are merely purchasing a pretty floor covering that will decrease in value. Many shrewd Iranian businessmen have invested their entire wealth in Persian Carpets referred to as Iran's stocks and shares. They store them beneath the bazaar for future investment needs. As reflected in Iran's economic reports, from March 2004-March 2005 carpet production declined by 17.5 percent. The work force has been gravitating towards industrial work, and carpet production has been slowly decreasing. As noted in their news media, the export of carpets will be decreasing in the years to come while other industry exports will be increasing. So the present day Persian Carpets will most likely be the museum pieces of tomorrow. Persian carpets have been labeled as "national treasures" by the Iranian government, and in order to maintain this international status, the carpets are strictly regulated to ensure the best quality in both material and artistry.
